CARV is an independent artisan leather accessories brand based in Hackney Wick in East London producing bags with a minimal contemporary aesthetic that are made using traditional hand methods and leather. Every CARV bag, backpack and accessory is carefully made by hand from start to finish using the highest grade British and Italian vegetable tanned leather and locally sourced hardware.
The clean, minimal design style showcases the natural beauty of leather produced in traditional tanneries using the vegetable tanning method, whereby leather is created using natural tannins such as tree bark.
CARV's founder, designer and in house atelier, Becky Cocker, originally trained as a town planner but decided in 2015 to pursue her dream of a creative path. Becky believes strongly in the benefits of slow fashion and the importance of supporting local manufacturing and traditional leather tanneries in the modern fashion world. Becky learned the centuries-old hand leatherworking skills through the writings and teachings of Valerie Michael and then launched CARV in January 2016.
The following core principles underpin the CARV ethos:
Each piece is carefully made by hand from start to finish in East London ensuring it is well made and long lasting.
limited numbers of each bag is made every year allowing the focus to be on lasting quality and individuality.
USING only (chemical-free) vegetable tanned leather Supporting traditional British and Italian tanneries, being kinder to the environment, and ensuring that our products age beautifully.
All materials are sourced from local suppliers to support a diverse UK skills base and manufacturing economy.
Becky actively promotes skills and knowledge exchange and is pleased to share information about leatherworking, suppliers and advice on setting up a small business.
